Almost 30 years ago, the Jewett, TX, WWTP installed a Lakeside oxidation ditch with two (2) 7-foot Cage Rotors and one (1) 6-foot Adjustable Weir, as well as one (1) 22-foot Spiraflo Clarifier to handle the city's wastewater, initiating an extended period of high quality effluent.
In 2005, as the town's flow increased, a second 22-foot Spiraflo Clarifier was added to the plant, maintaining its exceptional effluent levels. Discharge is sent to a minor tributary in the area, which leads to the Trinity River, Lake Livingston and eventually to Houston, TX, for reuse. The final application in Houston prompted the state to adapt strict effluent limits. Lakeside's Spiraflo consistently produces levels well below the limits, including TSS consistently between 2.5 mg/L and 8.6 mg/L. (see table)
The Spiraflo is known for its peripheral-feed design that directs the flow around the side walls and under the race skirt. Solids settle at the bottom of the tank and wastewater is discharged over the centrally located effluent weir. With this flow pattern, the tank's full volume is in use and the settling of solids is more effective than other clarifiers.
The original clarifier has been running non-stop since its installation nearly three decades ago, and runs simultaneously with the new Spiraflo. Plant Superintendent Rudy Hibbeler says there has been little maintenance to either of the Spiraflos and they continue to be "very easy to operate. We are very satisfied."
